The impact of human activities on the climate system is known since about 120 years and respective scientific research has been undertaken since then. By the end of the 1970s, scientists have expressed their serious concern about the emission of CO_2 but have been widely unheeded since. Meanwhile, their warnings have become reality. What is the climate system? Why does it respond so sensitive to human activities? What are the impacts of climate change on different human and environmental systems? How do climate scientists generate their knowledge about the state and the future development of the climate system? How probable are the future scenarios? What about the small window of opportunity left which may allow humankind to prevent the climate system from running out of control?
